The diameter of a pencil is 4mm and its L is 14cm. The diameter of graphite in it is 1mm. Find vol. of wood?
u have to find the vol. of wood used in the pencil and the vol. of graphite
The pencil is a cylinder so the Volume, V = B h where B is the area of the circular base and h = height. The lead is also a cylinder so use the same V = B h to find its volume. Then subtract the lead volume from the pencil volume to find the wood volume.
Volume of Pencil: V = B h. B = pi r^2 = (3.14)(2^2) = 12.56 mm^2. h = 14 cm = 140 mm.
V Pencil = (12.56)(140) = 1758.4 mm^3.
Volume of Lead: V = B h. B = (3.14)(1^2) = 3.14 mm^2. h = 140 mm.
V Lead = (3.14)(140) = 439.6 mm^3.
V Pencil – V Lead = V Wood.
1758.4 mm^3 – 439.6 mm^3 = 1318.8 mm^3. Answer
