What is a good set of affordable irons for someone moving past beginner stage?
ive been playing about 3 times a week a little over a year now
my handicap is about 15 now but getting better fast
my drives are about 280-300 yds off the tee
and I just turn 30 years old in August
im using an old set of Head irons from the mid 90s i can tell im outdated when i see other ppls stuff
It all depends on what you want to spend. The cheapest way to get good clubs is to go and demo a few sets of clubs from a sporting goods store or golf pro. Find the ones you like then go to ebay and you can save a couple hundred. Just make sure you vet the seller and make sure that their stuff is real. A lot of fakes on ebay. I’ve found: timtheputterman has great stuff at great prices. All his stuff is legit. Rockbottomgolf is another good seller.
You can do some additional research online too. Golf Digest has a section called the “hot list” that will give you a little more insight into the clubs you’re interested in. The top brands in golf are: Taylormade, Callaway, Nike, Cleveland, Ping, Titleist, and Cobra. They all offer cast cavity back game improvement irons and forged players irons/blades. At a 15 handicap, I suggest a cavity back iron. They are clubs that are more forgiving making it easier to get the ball up in the air and straight. Blades are for single handicap players who want precision and a lot of workability (being able control the draw or fade of the ball at will). I would suggest the Taylormade Burner, the Callaway X-22 or X-24′s, the Nike VR Cavity back, the Cleveland CG7, Ping G-15, Titleist AP1, and Cobra S2′s. Try out a few and see which ones you like. There are quite a few deals on ebay for Taylormade Buner Pluses, Callaway X-20′s and Nike VR Cavity back. You can pick up a set of those in the $200-$300 range on ebay.
If you have a large budget and don’t mind paying retail then you can go to a golf pro and be fitted. What they do is measure your swing speed to your shaft flex in addition to finding the right iron head. They’ll help you decide whether to use a steel or graphite shaft. And it’s great if you’re really tall or short, really big or small hands, have a steep or shallow swing, because those characteristics don’t fit a standard off-the-shelf iron.
