Can anyone tell me the mechanics of hiting down on a short iron shot in golf ?
As opossed to a sweeping motion.
There are mechanics that help (which I will provide), but the real problem is usually mental. If you have got your brain in the habit of trying to lift the ball, then you are swinging at the ball itself as the apex of your swing. Even if you can time it perfectly, this is a weak way to hit the ball because your hands must flip (right hand pushing the club into/under the ball) and decelerate. Here is how you can identify and fix this and add 10-20+ yards to every club:
Grab a laundry bag and a middle to short iron (7,8,9). Pack the laundry bag full with old clothes so that it is heavy, but giving. Take a swing stance, placing the bag where you would place your ball. Swing your club into the bag so that you stop your swing when it hits the bag and notice where the club head is in relation to your hands. If your hands are not still in front of the club head (ie. if the club head is even or in front of your hands), then you are flipping and lifting.
Fix:
1. Make sure that you are NOT holding the club along the same angle as your arms. If you bend your wrists down toward the ground in order to put the shaft at the same plane as your arms, you cannot possibly strike down at the ball. Your arms should hang straight down and the club should project out at the ball from the hands – the obtuse angle formed between the arms and shaft is very important for control and power. You can’t do #2 without that.
2. For this exersize, use a sand wedge. The short shaft enhances the feeling you want to experience. Lighten your grip pressure and make a slow backswing so that you can FEEL the weight of the club head as it moves. Allow that weight to turn the club on the way back instead of trying to control the club with your wrists (beware of allowing the weight to take your swing too far inside – let it control your wrists, not your arms). Now swing through, keeping your wrists loose and just pulling your torso and arms through. Let the weight of the clubhead pull the club thru the hitting area and INERTIA will square the club face for you. This is basically teaching you the same thing a medicus club does and it is the reason the club head is designed the way it is (fat toe, thin heal).
3. If you are still having a problem lifting. Try hitting for a little while using a severely strong grip (ie. left thumb at 3-4 o’clock). Although I don’t recommend swinging this way permanently, the overly-strong grip makes it very, very hard for your hands to flip. Practicing it for a while at the range will give you an idea of how it feels for your hands to pass the ball first, then the club.
Try to think of cracking a whip, not hitting a ball. The angle in the club vs. the arm turns the club into a weighted whip. The hands pass through the hitting area first and then CRACK, the club head whips through the ball. When you’ve got it down, you will be able to hold your wrist cock and inertia will unhinge it at the very last second, then POW – distance.
