San Francisco

Those mornings I walk the streets of San Francisco, unsure of what they could find, looking for work, then as the morning progressed in the day, and about noon, turn on the drafting of a cool summer air, a cool breeze. I walk through this particular hotel, which seemed to be both a great hotel class Now a little warning, and more on the dark side of life, and himself, and about their context you could see his age, his name was evidently known, even to a certain level intellectuals, is a reference point, class and powerful the sidewalk every morning, like a tramp, as certain characters, with a monkey sad unshaven future thin, not too tall, half his teeth in his head had disappeared, his fingers a slight tilt, an affable sort of person, only sweeping, as if does not care in the world, happy as could be, as if a secret and only he knew, as if the golden fleece itself, I stopped and talked to him several times, I said I'd been doing that job, sweeping and cleaning of the boiler, and commissioning light fixtures in the basement, and so on, from fourteen. I could not believe it. And he said, saying that humble and grateful, and proud,

"I have to sleep by the oven's hot, I like there, and is private. "

And he smiled a funny sort of smile, as if he had swallowed a gold fish, I mean he was happy with his life simple and easy it was, and I thought at once, how good it was for the hotel to put this poor soul on a bed and give him a roof over his head and a warm place to warm your feet, and not charge a penny, and as a result, only wait for what is worth doing an hour of work, if that.

I saw him occasionally, as I mentioned earlier, nodded occasionally, when I saw him and moved on. There was clear passage to me and to the street, like an old soldier at attention, as if I were an officer, a general. Always smiling, never angry, a merry old soul always thought. In fact, I liked to walk down the street, and a couple of times, if the morning, and I was in the area, walked about the hotel, hoping he would be out, and I say hello, and more often than not he was. A couple of times he was going, or just coming out the side door of the hotel, but no matter what, if you have an idea from me, he would smile, wave.

"What makes a man so I thought at that time. Most people do not smile, and certainly not to foreigners. But it was not like most people, he was different. A bum I told myself, it's just an old tramp, no more, and thought I was being nice, even talk to him, I was vague and that Again he had no job, I was twenty years old, a child of the Midwest, far from home. Still I said, do no believe that may have had a difficult life. He was, it seemed he was in his sixties or seventies, if I remember correctly, that's what I thought, did not know at that time, I said it was in 1968.

When I was about to say, I walked by him and he would be waiting, standing aside as my driver. I liked it. Of all Anyway I kept walking in search of work, knocking on doors, listening to the sounds of the street, through the tires, I like those sounds, the sounds of birds, Car horns, and so on. Then one day, a few months down the road, grabbed a newspaper and learned that he had died. Fair and died, had sixty-six years of age who was an advanced age I guess, at that time. But what surprised me, what really fascinated me, especially, was that while it is sad who had died, and perhaps not a real age-old, who even had a closer look at the paper, saw his face, said it was the same person who read and reread that said,

"(such and such) … leaves a balance of $ 250,000 for the hotel in his will."

"If you do not beat all," I told myself.

I tell you, just do not know anything about other people. Perhaps my first lesson in judging absolute evil, and never call me a tramp an ass again: do not judge the person because it looks the way it looks.

I was proud to have known him, I wonder how, maybe the money could be left on site. The hotel, most satisfied, and the old man seemed genuinely died. And by the look of the hotel, you need every penny of what to update. As I write this, forty years have passed, and $ 250,000 then, possibly, would be equal to four times that amount, thinking that doubles every ten years. Something like that, So it would be like receiving a million dollars today, for purposes of renewal, if not more.
